Braided Hair (1840-1857)

Perhaps the rarest of the half cents is the Braided Hair series, which features some of the lowest mintages compared to other half cent designs. Although production began in 1840, the first circulation strikes were not minted until 1849. By 1857, the half cent had outlived its economic usefulness and the denomination was officially discontinued.
