Certified & Slabbed Coins
Independent coin grading and certification started to emerge in the early to mid-1980s. A certified, or slabbed, coin is a coin that has been encapsulated by one of the many grading services available to collectors. These grading services verify the authenticity and condition of each coin, enabling collectors to buy with confidence and a degree of consistency. The three most popular and reputable grading services are ANACS, NGC and PCGS, but some other grading services also enjoy strong reputations. Regardless of the grading service utilized, collectors should carefully consider the pros and cons of each and remember to always buy the coin, not the holder.
