Confederate

Immediately following the start of the Civil War in 1861, the Confederate States issued paper currency, sometimes called "Greybacks," which were essentially promissory notes and not backed by any hard assets. Counterfeiting was problematic, and when it became clear the Confederacy would lose the war, notes essentially lost all of their value. The last issue was in 1864.
