The Eisenhower Dollar marked the first dollar coin issued by the U.S. Mint since the cessation of the Peace Dollar in 1935. After the Coinage Act of 1965, circulating coins were predominantly made from base metals, including the Eisenhower Dollar. However, several 40% silver issues were minted strictly for collectors. Its large size hindered widespread circulation, with the notable exception of Nevada casinos, prompting the suggestion of a smaller coin design.
