The short-lived Flying Eagle Cent was introduced in 1856, although fewer than 1,000 specimens are known to exist for that year. The new coin was designed by James B. Longacre and replaced the larger and increasingly unpopular Large Cent. Due to the coin's design, strike quality was inconsistent and ultimately was replaced by the Indian Head Cent in 1859.
