The 1883 (No Cents) Liberty Head Nickel was originally issued without the word "CENTS" on the reverse. Opportunists gold-plated the coins and passed them off as $5 gold pieces, now called "Racketeer Nickels." The word "CENTS" was later added to eliminate this problem. This coin is in AVERAGE CIRCULATED condition, making it the most popular choice for the average collector.
