Obsolete & Other

Prior to a standardized currency and monetary system in the United States, the country relied on state-chartered banks and other private institutions to facilitate commerce and economic stability. These banks and institutions issued a large variety of banknotes to meet local demands but quickly became obsolete with the onset of the Civil War and introduction of an official national currency system in 1861.
