Proof Sets (1936-Date)

Although proof coins have been produced since 1817 (the first official release was in 1856), the first proof set was not issued until 1936. Originally, collectors had to purchase each coin individually in order to get the complete set, but by the 1950's sets came pre-packaged. Proof sets were initially minted and issued by the Philadelphia Mint, but in 1968 production shifted to San Francisco where sets have been made since.
