After a prolonged hiatus, silver dollar production resumed in 1840, featuring the Seated Liberty design that was common across various denominations at that time. It is thought that a substantial quantity of silver dollars was consistently sent to China in exchange for goods. The increase in silver prices led to these coins being valued above their face value, which in turn caused a shortage as they were extensively hoarded or retained in reserves.
