The Statehood Quarter Program was initiated in 1999 to honor each state in the sequence of its statehood. Annually, five states were celebrated. Although it was set to conclude with the release of the 50th state coin in 2008, the program was extended an additional year, and six extra coins were issued to honor the U.S. Territories. The program is credited with igniting interest in coin collecting and prompted the U.S. Mint to produce various other circulating commemorative coins in different denominations.
