The Coinage Act of 1873 resulted in the introduction of Trade Dollars, which were silver dollars minted by the U.S. Mint for the purpose of trading with China and other countries where silver was the preferred currency. Although the Act allowed Trade Dollars to be used as legal tender within the United States to a certain extent, they were not popular among merchants and the public and were subsequently demonetized in 1876.
