Introduced in 1932, the Washington Quarter was initially a commemorative coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. Its popularity led to its establishment as a regular-issue coin by 1934. Initially composed of 90% silver, the coin's material was switched to a copper-nickel alloy in 1965. Production of the Washington Quarter was suspended in 1999 with the launch of the Statehood Quarter program.
